Steele an Uncertainty - Part XII

Although Remington knew help would arrive shortly, he felt a growing sense of panic.  Laura hadn't come to yet and the longer she remained unconscious the more he was certain her condition was serious.  Closing his eyes he tried thinking of something he could do to help her.

"Laura, I feel so bloody useless right now.  You've got to hang on and stay with me.  Help will be here soon ok?"  his voice broke in the darkness.

After a few additional minutes of agonizing silence he heard a faint moan.  It was so soft he thought he'd imagined it but when it came again he knew it was real.

"Laura?  Laura wake up.  Come on Laura open your eyes.  You can do it, open them!"  he urged.

Blinking slowly Laura's eyes suddenly fluttered open.  She tried to lift her head and moaned instantly at the pain.  She closed her eyes again and quieted.

"No!  Laura don't!  You have to stay awake.  You can't go back to sleep.  Come on wake up!"  Remington said loudly as he touched her arm with as little pressure as he could.

"What happened...how did..."  Laura tried to say but moaned again.  "It hurts,"   She said as tears slid down her face.

"I know...I know it hurts right now but you have to stay awake Laura.  You've been in an accident and you have to stay awake until the ambulance gets here."  Remington pleaded.

He wasn't sure if what he'd said registered and when he saw her eyes closing he roared loudly into the silence.

"Dammit Laura stay awake!  Stay awake or I swear this time you're going head first into the pool!"   He said seriously.

He saw her eyes open again and smiled.

"Talk to me Laura, tell me where it hurts,"  he instructed.

    "Head...my head..." she mumbled.

Tilting his head slightly Remington made out the sound of sirens from above them.

"Oh thank God.  Laura help is here.  I'm going to go lead them down here,"  Remington said quickly.

"Don't leave me,"  Laura said weakly.

Reaching down Remington took her hand gently in his.  He squeezed it and smiled when after a few seconds Laura squeezed it back.

"I won't leave you.  I'm right here and I'm not going anywhere.  Laura do you hear me?"  Remington asked.

Turning her head slightly Laura looked into Remington's face and smiled.  Her eyes glistening with tears she whispered, "Thank you."

Slowly he pulled her right hand toward him and rubbed her hand on his face.  He put it back at her side and pulled the flashlight from his pocket.  He could hear commotion up above them so he held the light out the window and waved it frantically.

    "The calvary?"  Laura said meekly.

    "Yes,"  Remington clarified.

When the rescue crew arrived Remington hoisted himself out of the car and stood aside so they could help Laura.   He stood with his arms crossed in front of him as paramedics leaned in and out of the car stabilizing Laura and getting her ready to be transported.  When they raised Laura out of the battered car they had her neck secured in a brace and her strapped securely to a board to keep her immobile.

Remington declined help getting back up the steep incline and walked as closely as he could to Laura's litter.  He couldn't see if she was awake or not but he talked to her anyway.

"We're almost to the top Laura.  Won't be much longer now,"  He rambled on trying to fill the silence.

Once in the ambulance the paramedics continued working on Laura and looked over Remington.  They asked him a series of questions while they worked, about the accident and Laura's general health.  He answered them in monotones as he looked at her strapped, bandaged and unconscious on the stretcher.  When the question and answer session was over Remington put his head in his hands and closed his eyes.

Felecia, Daniel and Mildred found Remington lying on a group of chairs with his eyes closed.

"Harry?  Harry my boy are you awake?"  Daniel said gently.

Opening bloodshot eyes Remington slowly sat up and swung his feet to the floor.

"Yeah, just resting a bit,"  Remington said to his father.

"Any news on Laura's condition?"  Felecia asked as she sat down beside him.

"Not yet.  I'm still waiting to hear something,"  Remington replied.  "It was good of you to come,"

"Where else would we be?"  Mildred said as she sat on his other side.

"Do you want to tell us what happened?"  Felecia said as she rubbed his shoulder.

"Not really but I suppose I have to,"  Remington replied.

He filled them in on the events leading up to their accident and was overcome with emotion when he described finding Laura unconscious in the car.

"I never meant for it to go that far.  I thought I could calm her down but the more I implored her the worse it became,"  Remington choked on the last word and buried his face in his hands.

"Laura will make it through this darling, we have to believe that she'll pull through,"  Felecia assured him.

"But what if she doesn't eh?  It will be my fault if Laura doesn't survive.  I did this to her!  I drove her to the point that she'd risk her life trying to get away from me.  What the bloody hell does that say about me?  I always seem to cause her pain don't I?  One way or another I seem to be at the crux of everything that hurts her and I've only ever wanted to be with her,"  Remington said bitterly.

"Oh boss don't talk like that.  You've done more than cause Miss Holt pain.  It's your grief talking right now.  You're scared for her, we all are but don't beat yourself up over her accident because it was just that,"  Mildred said heavily.

The door swung open and a surgeon came in.  Remington bolted out of his seat and hurried toward the man.

    "Monsieur Steele?"  he asked.

"Yes, I'm Steele.  Laura, how is she?"  he rushed.

"Madmoiselle Holt is a very fortunate young woman.  Her injuries were severe but she will survive,"  he said confidently.

Remington's legs buckled and he almost crumpled to the floor had Daniel not come up beside him and lent his support.

"She has the usual lacerations after such a collision, a concussion and a sprained wrist.  She suffered some internal injuries and we've had to remove her gall bladder but with proper diet it shouldn't be too detrimental.  She's in recovery at the moment but will be moved to her room shortly,"  the doctor concluded.

"Can we see her?"  Felecia asked.

"Certainly, though I'd prefer you keep the visit short in duration,"  he replied.

Remington and Daniel shook the doctor's hand and thanked him before he left the waiting room.

"Thank God the news is good,"  Felecia exclaimed dabbing her eyes with a handkerchief.

"My boy I think you should go in and see her.  We'll wait here,"  Daniel instructed.

"Ok,"   Remington said as he headed for the door.

He turned around before he passed through the door and smiled in gratitude.

"Thank you all for being here.  I don't know what Laura or I would ever do without each of you,"  Remington said warmly.

"Well isn't it your good fortune not to have to find out?"  Daniel said in a voice laden with emotion.

When Remington was gone all three heaved a sigh of relief at the news.

"I think I've aged considerably over the last few hours,"  Daniel remarked as he sat down.

"I'll say,"   Mildred agreed as she sat heavily in a chair.  "I pray they can work out their differences,"

"Sometimes it takes great adversity for some to realize their destiny,"  Felecia said sagely.

Remington stood quietly beside Laura's stretcher looking at her.  The nurse had informed him of Laura's progress before she retreated.  He took her hand in his and kissed it lightly.

Laura's eyes fluttered open and she blinked a few times.

"You're still here,"  she said lightly.

Leaning down Remington whispered in her ear.  "Where else would I be?"

    "Will I be alright?"

"Yes, you're going to be fine.  Almost as good as new,"  Remington informed her.

    "Are you lying?"

"No.  Now you have to rest.  The nurse said she'd string me up if I tired you out.  And I believe her,"  Remington smiled.

    "Will you..."

"Shhh.  Rest Laura.   I'll be here when you wake up.  I promise,"  he said softly and kissed her cheek.

Laura was asleep almost instantly.  Remington pulled up a chair and sat next to her bed and wrapped her hand in his.

Sometime later the nurse came back into the room to check on Laura.  She saw Remington's head lying face down on Laura's bed, his breathing even and deep.  Smiling, she made some notes on Laura's chart before quietly leaving the room pulling the door shut behind her.
