Steele an Uncertainty - Part XI

Laura stood looking at the sparkling lights below her.  From her vantage point the city seemed to bustle with activity.  She smiled bitterly and thought how beautiful Monaco was and how she'd wished she could have toured the breathtaking principality before she left.  Laura put her hand on her chest in an effort to squelch the dull pain she felt.  She wasn't one to abandon a task once she set her mind to it but right now she felt defeated and utterly without hope.  From her encounter with Remington earlier, any thoughts of salvaging her relationship with him were pipe dreams.  It was broken beyond repair and she almost drowned in her inconsolable loss.  Laura was still looking at the city lights when a car sped past.  Laura didn't even look up until she heard tires screech to a halt and the car back up.  Curious she turned around to see who the intruder was.

Remington was beside himself when he recognized Felecia's Audi.  He slammed on the brakes and quickly backed up.  He stopped the car, got out and walked around the side.  He expelled the breath he'd been holding when he saw Laura leaning on the side of the car.

"Laura!  Thank god I've found you,"  Remington said as he walked toward her.

Laura immediately backed up and eyed the cause of all her pain with hostility.

"What are you doing here?"  She said stiffly.

"I was looking for you.  Everyone was worried when you dissapeared,"  Remington said calmly.

"Except you of course,"  She shot back.

"I was worried too,"  Remington admitted.

"Spare me!  Well now that you've found me you can go back and tell everyone I'm safe,"  Laura said and turned away.

Remington walked slowly toward her but she ran around the car.

"Don't come any closer.  I don't want you near me,"  Laura said tightly.

Remington stopped where he was and put his arms up in a calming gesture.

"Ok, I won't come any closer but can't we at least talk?  It's obvious you're upset,"  Remington concluded.

"Upset?  Honestly Mr. Steele what the hell do I have to be upset about eh?"  She threw his words back at him.

Remington sighed heavily and tried to think of how to deal with Laura's current emotional state.  She was in no condition to drive and he would have to tread lightly to calm her down enough to get the car keys from her.

"Look, why don't you let me take you back to Felecia's and we can sort this all out,"  Remington said evenly.

"Why?  So you can hurl more insults at me?"  Laura yelled.

"Or you can hurl me in the pool again?"  Remington countered.

"You deserved that,"  Laura said quickly.

"Maybe I did,"  Remington replied.  "But I'm certain we both said some things we wish we could recant,"

"Are you sure?  Most people become painfully honest in the heat of battle.  And I don't think I could take anymore of your honesty.  I think I've had a belly full of it already,"   Laura choked out.

She was losing her composure and hated herself and him for bringing her to this point, again.  She quickly jumped into the car and turned the engine over.

    "Laura wait!"  Remington yelled.

He rushed to the door and tried to open it but it was locked.  Her window was open and he tried to get his arm in and unlock it from the inside.

"Please don't do this,"   Remington pleaded.

Laura punched the accelerator and the car sped off.  She shifted gears quickly to put as much distance between her and Remington as she could.

"Damn!"  Remington cursed as he ran back and hopped in his car.

He raced off down the road after her.  The porsche responded effortlessly as Remington redlined each gear trying to catch up to Laura.  He saw her tail lights in front of him and pushed his pedal further down.  Laura was intent on the road in front of her until she noticed a light flashing behind her.  Remington was flicking his high beams off and on in an attempt to get her attention.  He pulled as close to her rear as he dared and honked his horn to get her to pull over.  Laura turned back to the road and shifted down then up.   Remington applied his brakes to put more distance between them.  When it became apparent that Laura wasn't going to stop he put on his seat belt and punched the gas pedal.  He pulled around her in the opposite lane and brought his car parallel to hers.

"Laura!"  He yelled from along side her.  "Pull over!"

"No!  Just leave me alone!"  She screamed out the window.

She sped up and Remington sped up to mirror her speed.  Remington knew the roads and Laura didn't and the speed she was traveling had him anxious.  They were coming up on a few tight curves and this pursuit could get out of hand.

"Laura for God's sake stop this bloody car!  There are some..."

He didn't get a chance to finish because a car was coming straight at him with it's lights flashing.  Remington hit the brakes and slid in behind Laura's car.  The other driver layed on his horn as he passed them.  Laura took the opportunity to put more distance between them.

"Enough is enough!"   Remington said tersely.

He slowly eased his car into her lane to force her off the road and onto the small shoulder to her left.

Laura slammed on her brakes and zipped around him on the wrong side of the road to pass him.  He sped up too so she wasn't able to get back into her lane.

"Laura this is crazy!  I'm begging you to slow down,"  Remington shouted through the window.

Laura knew she was being reckless but she was beyond caring, her primary goal was to get away from Remington.

"Why do you care?  You've made it clear how you feel about me so go away!"  Laura retorted.

She was so intent on yelling at him that she didn't see the lights coming at her.  Remington heard a horn sounding from in front of them and looked up.

"Laura look out!"  Remington shouted when he saw the truck coming head on at Laura.

Laura looked up and screamed.  Instinctively she turned the wheel as hard as she could to get her car out of the trucks path.  The car surged back into the left lane and right into Remington's path.   He slammed on his brakes but it was too late.  The front of car clipped the back of the Audi sending it into a 360 degree spin.  Laura slammed on the brakes but wasn't able to regain control of the car as it rammed in to Remington's.

"Oh God no!"  Remington mumured as they both spun out of control.  He applied his brakes and downshifted in an effort to slow their forward momentum.  Remington looked over and saw the look of fright on Laura's face.  Their eyes locked and time slowed.  The sound of steel grinding against steel was deafening but it was brought to an abrupt end when the cars broke loose of each other.  Laura's car skidded off the road and down an embankment.  When Remington's car came to a halt he tried to open the door to get out.  His door was smashed and wouldn't open so he scooted over and let himself out of the passenger door.  He ran over to the edge of the road and peered over the side.  He said a prayer when he didn't see fire.

"Laura!"  He yelled over and over.  When he didn't receive a reply he ran back to the car, opened the trunk and pulled open a plastic box.  He found a flare, lit it and put it on the road.  He grabbed a flashlight and ran around to the front seat.  He picked up the car phone and called for help.  After calling for an ambulance he ran back to the road's edge.  He carefully went down the embankment using the flashlight to scan the ground in front of him.  He saw the Audi when he'd gotten halfway down and his voice broke in the darkness.  It was laying on it's side with the headlights shining sickly in front of it.  He shined the flashlight around it's perimeter to see if Laura had been thrown from the car.  When he didn't see her, he quickened his pace.

"Laura, if you can hear me hold on, I'm coming!"

Gingerly, Remington climbed up onto the passenger's side of the car.  He was terrified of what he'd see so he took a few quick, deep breaths before shining the flashlight into the cabin.  The light illuminated the darkness and he saw Laura's limp body leaning against the driver's door.  He put the flashlight in the front of his pants and secured it with his belt.  Lowering himself into the car he clung to the the passenger seat to keep from smashing into her.  His hand was shaking as he felt her neck for a pulse.  When he found it he almost cried with relief.  He leaned over and cut the engine off.  He didn't smell gas but didn't want to take any chances.  She had a nasty cut over her eye and other facial bruises.  He wasn't sure of the extent of her injuries and since they weren't in immediate danger he didn't risk moving her.

"Laura.  If you can hear me, please hang on...don't go...Oh God, don't you dare leave me."
