? Remington’s House

(Two Weeks Later)

When Laura heard a noise, she looked up from the paperwork she was reading and saw Remington heading down the stairs.  She quickly slipped a piece of paper into a folder and placed it on the coffee table.

“Are they settled in?”  She eyed him wondering if he noticed her actions.

“For the moment anyway.”  Remington decided not to comment on her sudden disposal of paper work.

“So, what movie did they decided on?”

“Lion King, of course.”  Remington sat next to her.  As he put his arm around her, he noticed she glanced at the folder.

“Would you like some tea?”  Laura stood quickly and turned towards him.  “I want some tea.”

“Okay.”  Remington nodded but didn’t make an effort to move.

“I’m not comfortable with your kitchen yet.”  Laura extended her hand.  “How about you join me?”

Laura watched as Remington glanced at the folder then slowly rose.  She smiled when his eyes finally met hers.

 Ring! Ring!

Ring! Ring!

Laura jumped and glimpsed at the folder then the phone.

“The tea is in the cabinet above the stove.”  He strode over to the phone.  “Go ahead and start without me, and I’ll be right behind you.”

 “Okay.”  Laura moved hesitantly.

“Hello?”  Remington answered smiling at Laura as she left the room.  “Hey, Monroe…Tomorrow…Double Date…Kenya…Let me ask Laura and call you in the morning…LaTrac, of course…Okay…Okay…Bye.”

After hanging up the phone, Remington immediately headed toward the coffee table.  He speedily opened the folder and frowned at the contents.

Laura entered and cleared her throat.

Remington straightened as he closed the folder and held it in his hands as though it was evidence in a crime.

“Laura, I thought we agreed you were going to drop this whole North Carolina and Anthony thing?”  Remington didn’t bother to act as if he wasn’t reading the material or hide his anger.  And, Laura didn’t miss the icily tone he used.

“You had no right!”  Laura stormed toward him.  “That is personal property.”

“You told me you were going to drop this.  That you wanted to move on with your life.”  Remington repeated again his anger now at the boiling point.

Laura studied his jaw muscles as they flinched, he was shaking slightly, and his eyes were an icy blue.

“Just give me the folder.”  Laura growled.

“Hell no.”  Remington roared and watched as Laura’s eyes went toward upstairs.  “You are going to drop this now?”

Laura huffed when Remington tore the folder in two.

“What are you doing?  My plane ticket was in there.”  Laura bellowed and jumped at him.  She didn’t care if the kids heard her anymore.

Remington turned as Laura nearly grabbed the remnants of the folder.

“Along with several North Carolina addresses and contact names.”  Remington barked out as he tore a half of the folder into another half.  “This is over.  Tonight.”

“How dare you?”  Laura hollered as she tried to save the remaining half.  Her eyes became saucers when he threw all the pieces in the air.  “This is my life you are playing with.”

“NO!”  Remington countered looking up and seeing Tracy and Rem standing at the top of the stairs both crying silently.

“They are your life…I am your life.”  His tone was firm.  He headed towards the stairs to meet the kids who had started down.

Laura watched as Remington sat down on the bottom stair.  His anger had faded just as quickly as it came.

“Come here kids.”  Remington’s voice was gentle now as Rem and Tracy reached him and stared at Laura.  “Mummy and Daddy are just having a little argument.  I’m sorry we got too loud and scared you.”

Laura noticed Remington was talking mostly to Tracy even though he looked at both kids.  It was funny how the females in his life were so transparent to him.

“Are you going to make us leave?”  Rem eyed Laura nervously as tears continued to fall down his cheek.

“No, Son.”  Remington wiped the little boys cheeks then did the same thing to Tracy’s cheeks.  “We were having a disagreement.”

Laura decided to walk over to them.  She figured Tracy more than Rem would need a physical confirmation.  She was right.  Tracy immediately crawled into her lap after she joined Remington on the bottom step.

“Did Mummy find out about the second bowl of ice cream at dinner?”   Rem asked looking guilty.

Laura couldn’t help smiling inside as she finally realized that Rem had started using the British form of Mommy.

Rem had been spending more time with Remington and Tracy lately while she secretly pursued her past.  Of course, Remington just thought she was working late at the bank on loan backgrounds.

Remington smiled weakly as he ruffled Rem’s hair.

“No, Lad.  Mummy didn’t know about the ice cream.”

 “Oh.”  Rem lowered his eyes.

“Honey,” Laura started reaching to touch Rem’s face.  “Remington and I just don’t agree on something.”

“Then compromise.”  Tracy nervously looked at Remington and Laura.

Tracy watched as Laura and Remington stared at each other.

“Daddy won’t you compromise?”  Tracy waited for an answer but got none.  “You always told me some times you have too.”

“Why don’t you two go back upstairs.”  Remington ordered more than asked as he turned from Laura’s gaze.

 “But…” Tracy started.

“Now, honey.”  Remington ignored the child.

 “Daddy…” She tried again.

“Everything will be okay Liebe.”  Remington kissed Tracy’s forehead.  “Don’t worry.”

“Okay.”  Tracy turned in Laura’s lap to give her a hug and kiss.  “Goodnight, Mummy.”

“Goodnight, Sweetheart.”  Laura reached over to Rem.  “Night, Honey.”

“Night Mummy.”  Rem followed Tracy up the stairs.

Laura waited till the kids were completely out of sight before she whispered,

“Don’t you want to know what happened?”

“Laura, it doesn’t matter.”  Remington tried again with his voice matching hers.

Laura turned and looked at him.

“How can you say IT DOESN’T MATTER?”  She snapped her voice still low.  “I had my life taken away from me.”

“I HAD MY WIFE TAKEN FROM ME!  OUR DAUGHTER HAD HER MOTHER TAKEN AWAY FROM HER!  NOW WE HAVE YOU BACK!”  Remington stood.   “I guess now, I know why you haven’t answered my question about moving in here.”

Remington studied Laura’s face until she looked away.  He had asked her two days after she spoke with Rita about Rick to move in with him and Tracy.  He told her it was time to become a family again.

“What were you going to tell me when you took your trip to North Carolina?   Were you going to lie about where you were going?”

When she didn’t answer, Laura heard him move.  Looking up she saw him head upstairs.

“I don’t know.”  She whispered as he turned the corner and disappeared.

Laura was sitting on the couch when Remington came down again an hour later.   She sat up when she noticed he changed into his jogging suit.

“I need to go out for a run.”  Remington sat in the chair near the couch. He dropped his tennis shoes on the floor.   “Can you stay and watch the kids?”

Laura watched as he put on his shoes.

“Yeah.”  Laura studied him.   She knew he was still mad by the way he avoided eye contact with her.  “I didn’t know you ran.”

Remington looked up then back down at his shoes.

“I started shortly after I lost you.”  Remington stood and stared at her.  “I knew how much you loved it, so I ran when I needed to feel closer to you.”

Laura nodded in understanding then quietly said, “I’m here now.”

 “Are you?”  Remington questioned tersely.

Before Laura glanced away he saw the hurt in her eyes.

Remington cursed himself.  He wasn’t trying to hurt her, but he just couldn’t get her to understand how scared he was of losing her again.

“I know you don’t plan on spending the night.”  Remington sighed.  “Rem is sleep, so he can stay.  I’ll bring him home tomorrow.”

“No.”  Laura moved over to him.  “I’ll take him home.”

“Laura, it’s silly to wake him.”  He reasoned.

“I’ll take him home…” Laura cupped Remington’s face and kissed him.  “With me tomorrow.”

Remington watched as Laura unzipped the jacket to his jogging suit.  His eyes watched hers as she discovered he wasn’t wearing a shirt underneath.

“Time for round two, Mr. Chalmers.”  Laura allowed the jacket to fall to the floor then started working on his pants.

 “Laura…” Remington’s voice was hoarse.  “I can’t compromise.”

Laura sighed then looked up to smoky blue eyes.  Looking over his chest she decided she would drop her past for this moment.  All she wanted was to make love to him.  She wanted the comfort she felt in his arms a few weeks ago.

Laura woke to find Remington still asleep.  She fixed her brown eyes on her husband.

Why can’t I let the past five years go?  I am where I am destined to be – in the arms and life of this handsome, blue-eyed Irishman.  And, he loves me.

She crawled out of bed and grabbed the first piece of clothing – his robe.  Her eyes took in the sight of his lean masculine form as she tied the robe’s belt around her waist.

At this moment North Carolina, Anthony Micelli, and her lost years didn’t matter in her heart, but something in her gut wouldn’t let it go - something dealing with Rem.

‘Richard’ a soft voice spoke within her and she suddenly had an urgent need to see her son.

Laura wasn’t surprised when she found Rem asleep in Tracy’s bed.  He had fallen asleep watching Loin King.  Her two angels had developed a strong bond over the last few weeks.   Neither was jealous of the other, and they both gained the missing parent in their lives.

Over the weeks, sister and brother had grown closer, mother and daughter had bonded, and husband and wife had reunited.

‘And father and son had developed.’ the voice within her spoke.

 “Yes.”  Laura agreed.

Remington was becoming a father to Rem.

Laura knew she had to let her past go for her family’s sake.

“They are beautiful, aren’t they?”  Remington touched the small of her back and smiled when he felt her jump slightly.  “Did I scare you?”

She nodded yes as he pulled her to him, and they watched the kids sleep.

Moments later Laura tilted her head and stared up at his handsome face.

 “Can you play hooky tomorrow?”

Remington raised an eyebrow as he looked down into his wife’s chocolate eyes.   He could see love, adoration, and…mischief in those lovely eyes.

“Perhaps.  Why would I want to?”

“Because you have some packing to do at 5459 B Kirkland Place.”  Laura watched as Remington’s eyes lit as he understood what she was telling him.

“While I’m packing, what are you going to be doing?”

“Working.”  Laura smiled.   “I can’t just call in you know.”

“Oh.”  Was his simple reply.  She watched as a smile crossed over his handsome face.  “Then Mrs. Chalmers I think you should start paying your mover now.”

Laura giggled as Remington led her to their bedroom.
