*** This story takes place after the fifth season. I also altered the original ending. Daniel, for one, is still alive, and Anthony never meets Mr. Chambers.

Laura walked out of the bathroom to find Remington sitting on the edge of the bed sulking. The only thing covering his manhood was a satin sheet across his legs. She glanced at the bed and smiled in remembrance of the performance he gave to convince her not to go on this business trip. He made love to her as thought it was their last time. She came at least three times. Looking at him now, she wondered if she had time for four. Glancing at the clock on the nightstand, she knew there was no time. If he was going to drop her off at the airport, he had to get moving. The question is did he have plans to take her. He was still upset. “Are you going to take me to the airport?”  She asked walking up to him and playing with his hair.

     “Laura…”

“Please Rem.”  She said trying to bring the black tresses to some kind of order. “Last night...” She smiled deviously. “And, this morning are the memories I want to take with me, not us fighting.   Besides, you want me to come back right.” She teased then frowned when he didn’t smile.

Remington wrapped his arms around her waist to bring her to him and held his head against her stomach.  She felt a little sorry for him but not enough to keep the client waiting. And, he was just trying to win this fight.

She remembered at the office how he’d pouted when she’d first told him she had to go out of town. They both knew he was tied up in Los Angeles and couldn’t go with her.

Remington had argued that Rick Hansinger was Anthony’s client and not theirs and then reiterated, for the zillionth time that it was a bad idea to have Tony working for them.   In his eyes Anthony was being irresponsible by up and leaving without informing his clients, which reflected badly on the agency.

“Mr. Steele.” Laura had started, tired of this argument. It was her agency, she made the final decisions and Remington needed to accept it.  Tony was a member of the agency now, and he would remain there until she decided otherwise.

“Tony is in Mexico taking care of some personal business.  He didn’t explain what, but I am sure it required his immediate attention.  I tried calling him and telling him Mr. Hansinger needed him in North Carolina tomorrow, but I couldn’t get a hold of him.  Now, I can’t get in contact with Mr. Hansinger.”  She turned and picked up some folders off his desk.

“Tony I am sure is fine but Mr. Hansinger is another story.  He was hasty when he called to leave a message and I didn’t have time to ask him any questions.  He just left the address where he would be tomorrow.”

“Laura, I really think you should wait until Anthony comes back or until I can go with you.” He reasoned.

“Remington, we haven’t heard from Tony in two days and we don’t know when he is coming back.  You’re tied up till Thursday and I...we have an agency to run.”

Laura headed to her office hoping he would let the matter drop.  She could see if Tony and she were going together, but she couldn’t understand why he was having a problem with her going out of town for a day...two at the most.

“Have you forgotten we have a seven month old daughter that needs you?  She has a doctor’s appointment tomorrow at noon. For her cough, remember?” He called after her, wondering if that would do the trick.

Remington recalled the first night he took Laura out after Tracy was born.  Laura had called Mildred at least twenty times before the meal was served.

He watched her stop in the doorway of her office.  Great, at least he’d gotten her attention.

Laura slowly turned around. He watched as she licked her lips.  He knew she was mad, but at this moment he didn’t care.  Something just didn’t feel right about this, and he would feel a lot better if he could accompany her to North Carolina.  Mildred could watch Tracy while they were gone.

“Remington, when we found out I was pregnant you told me you would never ask me to choose between my career and my daughter.”

“Laura...” He started seeing the hurt in her eyes. “I am...not asking...asking you to choose.  I’m merely reminding you of her doc...”

“No, You are trying to make me feel guilty for leaving.  You can take Tracy to the doctor’s appointment. You have a 10 o’clock with Mr. Holmes and a 2 o’clock with Mrs. Edenfield.  I checked your schedule to make sure we didn’t have to cancel.  You have plenty of time to take her to her appointment.” She turned to leave again.

    “Laura.”

“Drop it Mr. Steele. My flight is at 8 a.m.”

Remington watched her backside then felt a chill.  He couldn’t shake the bad feeling he had.  Maybe tonight he could change her mind.  He glanced down at him watch; he had fifteen hours to change her mind.

 ¨ ¨ ¨ ¨ ¨ ¨

“Okay.  Call me when you check into the hotel.” Remington said standing in front of the boarding  gate holding a sleeping Tracy in his arms.

“I will.”  Laura said kissing Tracy’s cheek and watching as she stirred a little.  Their daughter was beautiful.  She looked more like Laura then Remington, but she had her father’s blue eyes.  Eyes that will be the end of some man one day.  She looked up at Remington whose blue eyes were on her and frowned a little.  He was staring at her as if he was trying to store every detail about her face.

“I’ll be home tomorrow.”  She said reassuringly.

Remington nodded then looked up when they heard the last boarding call for her flight.

“I love you.”  Laura said then stood on her tiptoes and kissed him firmly.

“I love you more.”  He said bringing his free hand up to her cheek and caressing it gently.

   “Tomorrow.” She promised.

Remington watched as Laura turned and left.  His gut turned.   He couldn’t shake the feeling yesterday and it had gotten stronger the closer they got to her departure.

Hampton Inn · Room 118 · 8:43 p.m.

   Ring! Ring!

   Ring! Ring!

Laura walked out of the shower and headed to the phone.  Noticing it was on the opposite side, she laid across the bed.

   “Hello?”

Laura got it before it went to voice mail or back to the front desk.

“I thought I told you to call me when you got in. Where have you been?” Remington snapped as he paced their bedroom floor.

“What?” Laura asked getting defensive.  What was wrong with him?  Why was he acting as though she were up to something.

“I have been calling you since your plane arrived. I left at least ten messages between your mobile and the hotel voice box.  I even left three with the desk clerk.”

He heard her sigh then paused at the window. He was going out of his mind and driving her crazy in the process. He couldn’t help it though. He had this feeling that Laura was in danger and that something bad was going to happen. Something, he wasn’t going to be there to save her from.

“You actually left five messages at the desk, twelve on my voice box, and seven on my mobile, but who is counting, hey?”

   “I’m sorry.”

“Remington, what’s going on?  Why is my being here driving you crazy?”   She asked.

He was making her jumpy.  When she got back from dinner, the desk clerk told her they sent maintenance to check her phone and all was well.  Laura questioned the desk clerk for fifteen minutes because she didn’t request the service.   She was about to ask to speak to a manager on duty when the clerk handed her five pink message slips with five different messages, all from Remington.

“Laura, I just got a feeling that something...isn’t right.”

“Like what? Do you think I am here having an affair with Tony.”

She remembered the conversation they had when she hired Tony at the agency. She was four months pregnant when the doctor said that her blood pressure was a major concern for him so she could only do paper work till she had the baby.

At the time it seemed like the perfect solution, but it gave Remington doubts.  He asked her if she didn’t get pregnant would she have left him to explore the possibilities with Anthony.  She tried harder from that day to let him know pregnancy or not, she wanted to be with him.  She even suggested they renew their vows. He was pacified at the time, but she knew he still had doubts.

“Laura, I can’t explain it. I...I have a bad feeling...”

“I’m fine.  I will be fine and I will be home in your arms tomorrow.” She promised.

“I can’t wait...So, what was so important that Mr. Hansinger couldn’t wait?”

“Believe it or not he was a no show.  The address he gave me was to a house that was up for sell.  I mean, it had a sold sign on it, so it could have been his.”

“That’s weird.” He glanced at Tracy who was still asleep. “What did the realtor say?”

Laura smiled then asked how he’d known she went to see them.  He replied he knew her.

“Well, the realtor told me he was the previous owner and he had just sold it.  She wouldn’t give me the name of who brought it, but she did call Mr. Hansinger’s office when I explained the situation.”

“And?” She could hear the alert in his voice.

“According to his secretary he got stuck in Virginia and couldn’t make it back.  She apologized and that’s that.”

   “Why didn’t they call you?”

“She didn’t have a number to reach me. And besides, Virginia isn’t that far from here. A few hours I believe.”

   She heard him sigh.

“I can’t wait until you’re back home. What where you doing before I called?”

“I just finished taking a shower.”

Laura was glad to hear some pep back in his voice, no matter how little.  “What’s our daughter doing?”

“She’s sleeping in our bed.” He said looking down at the their daughter.  She was sounded asleep with her bottle still in her mouth.  “She’s sleeping on your side.”

“Well, she’d better be the only female besides me sleeping in our bed.” She teased.

   “Do you have a doubt?”

“No.  I trust you with my life...and heart.”

Remington closed his eyes and wished she were there with him.  He loved it when she said things like that and she knew it.  He would usually make love to her then and there.  She rarely said it so when she did he promised himself he would have her every time as a physical seal of her words.

“Are you still wet?” He asked in a very seductive voice.

Laura smiled;  glad he’d taken her bait. Even though he never verbally told her, she knew he made a vow to himself to make love to her anytime she admitted she trusted him with her heart. It took her long enough to admit it to herself then longer to admit it to him.

“I want to make love to you Laura.”   Remington whispered into the phone.

She laughed then told him it was impossible at the moment.

“I told you I loved impossible challenges when we first met.”  He reminded her.

Remington lay down on the bed, making sure he didn’t disturb Tracy.

“Now, tell me what you are wearing and your exact position.”

Laura giggled then followed his orders.

¨ ¨ ¨ ¨ ¨ ¨

  Knock! Knock!

Laura stretched then turned to look at the clock. 8:45 a.m.  She jumped out of the bed.

“Oh.”  She said realizing she’d overslept.  Her flight was at 10:30 a.m.; she was going to be pushing it close.  Laura would have a talk with her man of Steele when she returned.  He had called her after Tracy’s four o’clock feeding to give her an encore of their phone conversation last night.  She smiled. He had problems with words when expressing his emotions, but he didn’t have any problems telling her what he would do to her when she got home.   Remington excited her so much it was like he was here with her.  Laura never knew phone sex could be so exhausting.

  Knock! Knock!

Laura hopped out of bed and rushed to the door. Maybe it was Mr. Hansinger. She left the hotel and room number with his secretary in case he got back into town before her flight.

“Who is it?” She said warily.

“Laura, open up.  It’s me, Tony.”
