Laura
faced Remington with her hands on her hips and her eyes smoldering with anger.
"What
do you mean by that?" Laura said hotly.
"You
know damn well what I mean by that!" Remington yelled.
"If
I knew, I wouldnt have asked!" Laura shouted back.
"I
thought you didn't care about Murphy like that!" Remington accused.
"Like
what?" Laura asked.
"Dont
play games Laura, you know how." Remington said.
"Im not.
I dont know what youre accusing me of here but youre way
off base!"
"Well, while you're figuring it out, I'll be
at my place enjoying a good
meal
and movie alone!" Remington stomped off.
"Wait! Let me
"
Just
then Murphy walked in effectively blocking Remingtons exit. He immediately took in the scene and smiled.
"Well,
well, if it isn't the great Remington Steele. Hello,
Mr. Steele." Murphy said with a smirk.
"Ah,
Murphy ole boy, putting on a few pounds, eh?" Remington replied coolly.
Remingtons
remark caused Laura to laugh to herself; shed noticed Murph had put on a
few
pounds too.
"Murphy,
what are you doing here?" Laura asked.
"I
tried calling and I didn't get an answer at your loft. I tried here and got a busy signal
so I thought I would come down and make sure everything was alright." Murphy replied.
"Well,
Murphy, as you can see, everything is just fine here." Remington assured him.
"Then
why were you two yelling and arguing?" Murphy countered.
"Just
a little misunderstanding." Laura told him.
"Yes,
Laura was just trying to remember some of the current events of a case."
Remington
eyed the two briefly, clenched his jaw and walked out.
Murphy
heard the front door swing shut and grinned at Laura.
"So,
Laura, you want to pick up where we left off last night?" Murphy asked pointedly.
He
walked toward her, wrapped his arms around her waist and leaned down to kiss her. Laura pulled away and put some distance between
them.
"Laura,
what's wrong?" Murphy asked.
"Nothing,
I was just thinking about something." Laura replied.
"Oh
yeah what?" Murphy asked.
"Nothing
important." Laura said.
Murphy
released Laura and walked toward the window. He
looked out into the night and expelled a sharp breath.
"You
were thinking about "him" weren't you?" Murphy said raggedly.
"You
mean Mr. Steele? No, why would I think about him?" Laura scoffed.
"Gee,
I don't know, you tell me."
"I
wasn't thinking about him. I was
thinking about a case we've been working on."
Murphy
looked at her skeptically but decided to let it drop.
"Yeah,
well, okay. Hey listen I'm going to take off.
You want a ride?" Murphy asked.
"No,
but thanks for asking." Laura smiled.
"Okay,
well I guess I'll get going." Murphy said and quickly kissed Laura on the cheek.
"Bye."
Laura said.
Murphy walked out the glass doors and the office was silent again. Laura turned to walk back to her desk when she heard a noise coming from
Remingtons office. Curiosity got the better of her and she decided to find out what or who it was. Laura opened the connecting door and even in
the darkness, she could make out a figure. The chair was turned toward the window so she couldnt make out who it was. Her hand slid up the
wall
to flip the light switch but before she could, the occupant in the chair turned it around.
"Hello?"
Laura whispered.
