"Well Mildred, aren't you going to answer the phone?" Justin Williams asked as he walked into the office. Mildred looked nervously at the phone and then back to Justin's gun. "Its after hours, I thought I'd let the service pick it up." Justin grabbed the receiver off the hook and handed it to Mildred. She picked it up and spoke. "Remington Steele Investigations, Mildred Krebbs speaking." "Hi Mildred, what took you so long, I thought you'd left by now." Justin eyed Mildred warily as she continued the call. "Uh, no sure haven't how can I help you Brett?" "Brett? What are you talking about Mildred, this is Jimmy, you know Det. Jarvis? I think we've got a lead Mildred. Joe interview Justin's girlfriend, she was flustered to say the least and had trouble recalling dates and times. To be certain, Joe followed up with the hotel and rental car companies. It appears that the two did in fact rent a car and stay in the hotel that weekend. The thing is, they didn't arrived until 12:00am Saturday morning not Friday afternoon like they'd said. So its feasible that Justin could have killed his Uncle and then gone out of town to have an alibi for that weekend. Joe's on his way to Justin's apartment now Mildred so we'll now something soon."
"Yes I know Brett, I heard about the story from Gladys yesterday. It was really a hoot wasn't it? I'm sorry I missed our dinner date tonight but I got stuck at the office. A client came in and you know how that goes." Justin gave Mildred a gesture to tell her to get off the phone. "Mildred, what are you taking about? Is someone there right now?" "Ah yes Brett, Bridgette and I will be along as soon as our client leaves ok?" "I got you Mildred, you keep whoever it is talking, I'll get backup and we'll be there as soon as we can ok?" "Sure thing Brett, love you too and see you later." Mildred hung up the phone and looked at Justin. "Why the hell did you tell him you'd see him later?" Justin asked angrily. "Because, we were supposed to have dinner tonight, if I didn't tell him we'd see him later he'd get suspicious and possibly drop by. He's really jealous that way."
Bridgette looked at Mildred as if she'd gone crazy but the insistent look Mildred gave her back told her to play along. "Yeah, you know how jealous boyfriends are if you've got a demanding career." "Shut up both of you. Now look, I came here for the portfolio my Uncle left. The cheap bastard never helped me out when he was alive but he sure as hell is going to now that he's dead. Look ladies, I would really hate to riddle you both with bullets, especially before I get what I came here for. So let's cut the chatter and fork over the documents." Mildred knew she had to stall till Jimmy got there. "What do you mean he never helped you out? Your Aunt told us he was always giving you money when you got into trouble with one of your business ventures." Justin took the bait.
"Hah, the old fart would lecture me about financial independence and responsibility ever time I asked for one red cent. You'd think he wouldn't mind helping out his younger brother's only child would you? After all, he wouldn't give me a job at his company when I asked so what'd he expect me to do? I got into some could investment deals, I had to put the money where my mouth was you know? So a few went sour, that's the risk you take, he should've known that, he was a business man just like me." "Yes and very successful to by the look of it." Bridgette added. Justin shakily ran a hand through his hair. "Look enough talk about my stupid Uncle, I want to know where the money's stashed and now Ms. Krebbs." Justin walked over to Bridgette and began sliding his gun along her cheek. "Before your assistant here gets a whole new look."
Remington's arms felt as if they would detach from his body. It had been some considerable time since he'd had to swim that far. He should have taken Laura's advice and continued training with her for her annual triathilon's. He'd scoffed at the suggestion when she'd made it but he sure as hell wasn't laughing now. He ground his teeth against his protesting limbs as he helped Laura out of the water and onto land. They slowly made their way further onto shore, Remington dragging the plastic box along with him. He prayed that there would be some essential survival gear in it. He looked at his wife. She looked like a drowned cat, he was sure he didn't look much better. His tailor was going to cry when he told him about the unfortunate accident that had befallen his formal creation, if they made it out of this disaster alive.
"Laura how are you my love?" Laura looked at him and tried to muster a smile. She couldn't quite make it. "I suspect slightly better than you did on having to swim that long distance. I will spare you the reminder on next year's triathilon though." Remington grinned into the darkness. "I thought about that myself actually, now let's see if this pandora's box contains something we can get a fire going with eh?" Remington opened the box and felt around inside. His fingers made out a round plastic tube that he prayed was a flashlight. It was. "Oh thank the Lord for small favors." he said as he pressed the button and illuminated them in light. He was all smiles as he glanced at Laura but his smile stopped when he saw her face. She had a nasty cut along the side of her face and her eye was beginning to blacken. She also had a peculiar palor about her. "Laura, you look like you've been battered around. Let's see if this bloody thing has a first aid kit to fix you up shall we?" Laura's stomach began to pitch. She held it and grimaced.
Remington found a first aid kit and made short order of getting Laura's cut bandgaged. He also found matches, bottled water, flares, a blanket, batteries and dried food. "Laura, look we appear to be in luck, at least we've got the means to survive out hear for awhile. Hopefully long enough for some help to arrive." Laura nodded and fought down another pain. Remington got up and told her he'd go try to find some kindling to get them a fire going. "I shant be long and we need to get dry. It won't do us well at all to catch a cold." Remington took the flashlight and told her to yell if she needed him.
As soon as Remington left Laura doubled over on the sand. She gritted her teeth against the pains in her stomach. She knew she should call him but she couldn't get the words out. How could she tell him things might be more serious than he ever dreamed. Remington headed for a wooded area that was closest to the shore. He made quick work of gathering enough wood and brush to keep a fire going for a while, hopefully long enough to get dry and possibly attract notice from the air. As Remington got closer to the shore he heard Laura cry out. He dropped his bundle and ran toward her. "Laura? Laura what's wrong?" Remington asked as he fell to his knees beside Laura. She was stretched out on the sand in a fetal position grasping her stomach. She tried to answer him but couldn't.
"Laura, you're scaring me to death, if you can sweetheart try to tell me what's wrong. Laura please, I need you to tell me what's wrong." Laura made a move to sit up so Remington quickly helped her lean against him. She was shivering. Remington asked her if she'd be ok long enough for him to get the wood and build a fire. She weakly nodded. Remington eased her back down on the sand and ran to get the bundle he'd dropped a few feet away. Remington had a fire going almost immediately, thanking his lucky stars he'd learned how to build a fire efficiently. Some things he'd learned, out of necessity at being on his own on the streets of London paid off at times. He moved back over to Laura and held her. "Laura are you able to talk now?" Laura nodded. "I...I feel a bit better now, I'm sorry for scaring you." Remington rubbed her shoulders. "Laura don't be silly, now tell me what's wrong."
"I had some very sharp pains in my abdomen. They only started when we got to shore, thank god or I would've drowned for sure. I'm scared Remington, I've never felt pain so intense like that." Remington frowned as he held Laura to him. "We've got to get to civilization Laura, you need medical attention. You could be bleeding internally or ruptured something." Remington said with concern. Laura looked at him and frowned. "It could be more serious than that Remington. I was trying to find the right time to tell you...I was going to tell you when we reached the Bahamas..." Remington looked at her intently, "Tell me what Laura? Laura if something's wrong with you, seriously wrong with you I want to know about it and right now!" Laura looked at him. She knew by his look that he wasn't going to just drop the subject. "Remington, I'm pregnant." Laura blurted out.
